Attention is power—are you giving it away?

This morning I met a friend at our local farmer’s market.

It’s one of my favourite places—a feast for the senses.

The smell of fresh bread and mushrooms grilling.
Farm stalls overflowing with vibrant produce.
Buckets of flowers in every colour and variety.
Music playing in the background.

After breakfast, we wandered past a flower stall with a stunning arch made entirely of fresh blooms.

Many were taking photos beneath it—including us.

But when my friend showed me our photo afterwards, her phone screen was in black and white.

I asked if the photo would be without colour too.

She smiled and said no—the photo was in colour as she demonstrated by turning the colour back on.
She just keeps her screen in grayscale.

Why?

“Because we live in an attention economy,” she said.
“Everything is designed to stimulate and distract.
This is my way of keeping things quieter.”

That hit me.

In a world full of pings, pop-ups, ads, and endless scrolling—it’s easy to forget that our attention is ours to manage.

We get to choose what comes in.
We get to choose what we respond to.
And we get to choose what we don’t.

It made me think:

If leadership starts with self, then it must begin with where we place our attention.

Not just our time.
Not just our energy.
But our focus.

Because whatever has your attention… has your power.

So I’ll ask you:

Where is your attention these days?
And is it aligned with what actually matters to you?

Here’s to leading your focus—before the world leads it for you,
